Maval is a tehsil located in the Pune district of Maharashtra and derives its name from the Marathi word mavalati which means the direction in which the sun sets. It is also historically significant for being the first abode of Shivaji who formed a peasant army here. Maval is a hilly terrain that is part of the Sahyadri Range and is divided into 12 sub-regions, namely Andar, Nane, Pawan, Karyat, Gunjan, Hirdus, Kanand, Velkhand and Mose.
