ECR or East Coast Road is a fast developing two lane highway known as State Highway 49 and is located in Tamil Nadu. It is built along the coast of the Bay of Bengal and connects Tamil Nadu’s capital city Chennai with Cuddalore via Pondicherry. The road has been extended up to Kanyakumari via Chidambaram, Karaikal, Nagore, Nagapattinam, Thiruthuraipoondi, Adirampattinam Manamelkudi, Ramnanathapuram. The road from Chennai to Kanyakumari has a total length of about 800 kilometres. ECR was built in 1998 and initially consisted of only small village roads. The infrastructure aimed at facilitating the inter-state connectivity and augmenting the tourist movement. ECR begins at Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai and considered as part of Chennai City roads till Uthandi. The route facilitated the business supply chain during the rule of Cholas in Southern India in the 10th century AD.
Economy, Industry & Employment
ECR is majorly a tourist destination and the tourism industry flourishes here. It has a lot of places of interest like Marundeeswarar Temple, Sholinganallur Prathyangira Devi Temple, ISKCON Temple Chennai, Tiger Cave and many more.
Infrastructure
ECR was made a toll road in April 2002. It stretches till Hanumanthai near Pondicherry is 113.2 kilometres long and has a total of 22 bends. Currently, the process of acquiring land for widening the 11.4 kilometres stretch from Thiruvanmiyur to Akkarai covering six revenue villages (including Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam, Kottivakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam and Vettuvankani) is underway.

The famous Bhoomiswarar Temple is situated on the ECR road. Besides, owing to the presence of several renowned temples and other places of interest, several real estate promoters are considering ECR as an excellent realty destination.
