Navi Mumbai is a planned township of Mumbai and is located on the west coast of Maharashtra. The idea to build the city was mooted by the Government of Maharashtra in early 70s and the planning was executed by a team of architects and urban planners which includes Shirish Patel, Charles Correa, R K Jha and Pravina Mehta. Navi Mumbai was established to dispserse and control population of the main Mumbai city. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), a state public sector undertaking, registered under the Companies Act, 1970 planned and developed the city. As per census 2011, the population of Navi Mumbai is more than one million.
Economy, Industry & Employment
Navi Mumbai is a hub for start-ups and newly incorporated companies to set-up their base. The planned Navi Mumbai Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which is located in the nodes of Dronagiri and Kalamboli are expected to improve commercial growth and provide employment to the city. However, many corporates have their offices in the city including L&T and Tanishq. The infrastructure boom in the city is likely to generate as many as over eight lakh jobs.
Infrastructure
Navi Mumbai is divided into seven nodes. Transportation needs in the city are fulfilled by four suburb stations – Vashi, Navi-Mumbai, Panvel and Belapur, and buses-run by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BSES) and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT). An International Airport is proposed to be built in Panvel area in Navi Mumbai. The airport will be a Public Private Partnership (PPP) venture with shares of the Government of Maharashtra and the Airports Authority of India. The Navi Mumbai Metro, a rapid transit system is also under-construction in the city. There are many renowned hospitals, educational institutions and other social infrastructure in the area.
Real Estate in Navi Mumbai
With infrastructure development at its peak, Navi Mumbai real estate is also going to witness a boom. The government and the authorities are planning to launch affordable housing in the city. Many top real estate giants have their projects in the city which include middle to high end housing and also commercial complex. The price of property in Navi Mumbai is still lower as compared to other cities.
